Two separate fires were suppressed in different homes, proving the reliability of misting systems.
On the morning of October 23, 2016, Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service (DFRS) received an alert at 10:14 hours regarding a house fire in Linton, Swadlincote. The alert came from a Portable Misting System installed in the residence, which had activated due to a fire caused by an unattended cooker hob. The incident highlighted the need to protect vulnerable residents from fire hazards, as the home’s occupant, a 63-year-old woman, required hospital treatment for smoke inhalation.
The Portable Misting System was a proactive measure, installed in the Swadlincote home in August 2016 after a referral identified the occupant as high-risk. Funded jointly by DFRS and Derbyshire County Council, these systems are designed to activate during a fire, suppress the flames, and alert emergency services. On this occasion, firefighters from Swadlincote, Burton on Trent, and Ashby de la Zouch quickly responded. The system’s immediate activation and suppression capabilities prevented the fire from spreading, safeguarding the occupant and minimising damage.
The incident underscored the effectiveness of Portable Misting Systems in protecting vulnerable individuals. The system’s prompt action not only suppressed the fire but also ensured rapid firefighter response, averting potential tragedy. This event was the second activation within a week, showcasing the critical role these systems play in fire prevention and safety.
As a result, DFRS and Derbyshire County Council continue to install these systems in high-risk homes, with 56 already fitted across Derbyshire. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to reduce fire-related deaths and injuries, demonstrating a commitment to safeguarding the most vulnerable residents.
