Queen Alexandra Hospital needed to expand patient bed capacity for operational resilience. They proposed a two-story modular building, presenting unique challenges. Post-construction, a Fire Risk Assessment raised concerns about evacuation in case of a fire. Three fire compartments were in place, and with increased patient numbers and longer travel distances, a fire at one end of the first floor could impede evacuation. The Fire Officer sought additional evacuation time through Progressive Horizontal Evacuation. Control measures were essential before the first floor could be occupied.
The hospital’s Fire Safety Officer contacted Surefire Services; part of EA-RS, to discuss temporary water mist systems for each fire
compartment along the main corridors of the first floor. Detailed drawings were provided to assess the coverage of each UltraGuard unit and its locations, respecting fire compartment separations and nursing stations. A comprehensive quotation and technical submittal were prepared, enabling evaluation by the local fire service, fire consultants, and building control.
EA-RS, as Surefire, swiftly deployed five UltraGuard units as a temporary solution while the link bridge was under construction. These units provided enhanced fire protection, ensuring the safety of patients and staff.
The proactive approach to fire safety demonstrated innovation and commitment to patient welfare, aligning with Queen Alexandra Hospital’s goal of operational resilience and safety.
