Enhancing Fire Safety For Greenwich University

Improving fire resilience in student residences through certified passive fire protection.

Greenwich University student residence passive fire protection and fire safety upgrade by EA-RS

1. The Challenge

Greenwich University, also known as the University of Greenwich, has
a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1890 as Woolwich
Polytechnic. Over the years, the University has evolved and grown into the esteemed institution it is today. The campus is of historical significance due to its location being part of UNESCO World Heritage Site and also known for its commitment to academic excellence, research and innovation.

Being a leading institution, the University recognised the critical
importance of ensuring fire safety of its students, faculty and staff. This
was particularly relevant for halls of residence, where the university as
part of its commitment to maintaining a secure environment, worked with their FM provider Sodexo to embark on a comprehensive passive fire stopping project.

A systematic approach was implemented where a thorough assessment of the buildings to identify areas susceptible to fire spread was completed. Based on the findings, the University prioritised areas requiring immediate attention. A suitable partner was sought to complete these fire stopping works identified to third party certification, and following a tender process, EA-RS were awarded with the project works.

Through a collaborative and consultative approach, a programme of works was created working with University to minimise disruption to occupants. Working within student halls can present challenges as with any occupied building.

2. Our Solution

EA-RS completed a fire-stopping survey for a duration of 16 working
days within the Cutty Sark building in December 2022. Following the
completion of the survey, a comprehensive defect report was submitted to the client inclusive of evidence and proposed solutions within the building. Following a review from the client a decision was made to complete all of the works described in the report.

3. Results

Project mobilisation was completed within 2 weeks of receiving the client purchase order, quickly organising resources and setting up logistics to initiate the project. The estimated duration for completion was 15 weeks, and the project was successfully finished on time, causing minimal disruption to the client and building occupiers. Full Operation and Maintenance (O&M) documentation was submitted within 2 weeks of completion, providing essential guidelines and schedules for managing the new installations effectively.

Additionally, the project ensured full compliance with UK fire safety legislation. This compliance highlights the importance of proactive risk management and collaborative engagement. By conducting regular risk assessments and implementing necessary safety measures, the project maintained high safety standards.
