Industry-led initiative equips 21 apprentices with hands-on insight into fire safety systems, compliance and life safety strategy across commercial buildings.
EA-RS Group Ltd has successfully delivered a two-day Fire Detection & Protection Apprenticeship Event in partnership with Jaguar Building Services Ltd, welcoming 21 electrical apprentices for an in-depth introduction to fire safety systems used across large commercial buildings.
The initiative forms part of EA-RS Group’s ongoing commitment to developing the next generation of industry professionals by increasing awareness and understanding of life safety systems, fire strategy, compliance, and the operational realities of protecting occupied environments.
Designed to bridge the gap between on-site electrical work and wider building safety responsibilities, the event provided apprentices with direct exposure to industry experts, real-world case studies and evolving fire protection technologies.
Building knowledge of fire safety systems in the built environment
Across the two-day programme, apprentices explored key areas of fire detection, suppression and passive protection, including system design, maintenance requirements and regulatory compliance frameworks such as BS 5839.
Sessions were delivered by leading industry specialists, including:
- Honeywell – represented by Tom Ford, covering BS 5839 fire alarm installation and maintenance, Alarm Receiving Centres (ARCs), detector spacing and system design, alongside live demonstrations of self-test detection and digital fire system innovation.
- Imperium Fire Consultancy Ltd – represented by David Murphy, Level 4 Advanced Fire Risk Assessor, focusing on compartmentation, fire risk assessments, fire doors, passive fire protection, evacuation principles such as the 2.5-minute rule, e-bike fire risks, and real-world examples of good and poor fire safety practice.
- Noventis – represented by Mat Dawson, delivering technical insight into wet and dry risers, sprinkler systems, fire pumps, hose reels, and ongoing testing, maintenance and compliance responsibilities.
Interactive quizzes, group discussions and practical examples ensured strong engagement throughout, helping apprentices connect technical theory with real-life application in occupied buildings.
Collaboration driving industry development
EA-RS Group also acknowledged the vital role played by Jaguar Building Services Ltd in supporting the coordination and delivery of the programme, with particular thanks extended to Camilla Schofield and Roger Starling for their involvement in bringing the event together alongside EA-RS Group’s Matt Evans.
Closing the event and reinforcing future investment
The programme concluded with strong feedback from attendees, who highlighted the value of learning directly from industry experts and gaining broader exposure to fire safety challenges beyond their day-to-day roles.
A second cohort of apprentices also completed the programme, bringing the total to 21 participants across both days.
Matt Evans, EA-RS Group Ltd, said:
“Fire safety is fundamentally about understanding how different systems, strategies and responsibilities come together to protect people and property in real environments.
Working in partnership with Jaguar Building Services Ltd, we wanted to give apprentices a broader perspective of the industry they are entering, not just the work they do today, but the impact it has within the wider built environment.
The engagement across both days was excellent. The questions, discussions and curiosity shown by the apprentices reflect a strong future for the industry, and we’re proud to play a role in supporting that development.”
Investing in the next generation of fire safety professionals
EA-RS Group continues to invest in education, collaboration and knowledge-sharing initiatives across the fire detection and protection sector. While many apprentices may not directly work within fire safety as a discipline, their roles contribute to the wider ecosystem that ensures buildings remain safe, compliant and resilient.
By supporting early exposure to fire alarm systems, sprinkler systems, fire strategies and compliance frameworks such as BS 5839, EA-RS Group aims to strengthen understanding across the broader construction and building services industry.
