A misting system put out a microwave fire, preventing serious harm to a mobility-impaired resident.
In 2020, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service (DFRS) identified a 72-year-old resident in Glossop as particularly vulnerable to fire due to her mobility issues. These concerns arose during a routine safety assessment, where it became clear that the occupant would struggle to escape safely in the event of a fire. DFRS sought a solution that would provide immediate fire suppression and protection to ensure the resident’s safety.
In June 2019, DFRS installed a Portable Misting System (PMS) in the
resident’s home. The system was chosen for its effectiveness in rapidly detecting and extinguishing fires, particularly in situations where the occupant might not be able to evacuate quickly. The PMS was strategically placed in the home to respond to fire hazards, thereby safeguarding the resident by suppressing potential fires before they could spread.
On the evening of October 14th, 2020, the PMS was activated when a
fire started in the resident’s microwave. The system promptly extinguished the fire, preventing it from escalating and causing significant damage or injury. Thanks to the PMS, the resident was protected from what could have been a life-threatening situation. The occupant’s daughter expressed profound gratitude for the system, acknowledging that it had likely saved her mother from serious harm.

not only protected the resident but also demonstrated the importance of targeted fire safety interventions for vulnerable individuals.
